Inservices for C.N.A's and Other Staff Members
REFRESH AND RETRAIN YOUR C.N.A'S ON ESSENTIAL RESIDENT CARE
We understand the vital role that nursing assistants play in the health care team. Today, in many health care organizations, C.N.A's deliver up to 80% of the hands -on client care! When you consider that aides have the least amount of pre-employment education of any clinical employees, it's clear that their ongoing on-the-job training is crucial. In fact, we believe that consistent; quality inservice education is key to retaining good C.N.A's and keeping turnover rates low. Good inservice education spurs critical thinking, enhances the quality of resident care, and encourages professionalism on the part of aides.
After C.N.A's have been out of school and on the job they can become lax in their resident care. C.N.A's can begin to take risky shortcuts in performing skills such as transferring a patient from the bed to a wheelchair or giving a bed bath, catheter care, etc. Providing an inservice that demonstrates the proper way to perform these and other skills could minimize accidents to your staff and residents.
There are a wide range of topics that need to be covered on a regular bases. Inservices in facilities is an affective way to train staff and keep the care to each resident consistent.
First and foremost C.N.A's should be refreshed and retrained on a regular bases regarding resident ADL's. We have put together a video of most of the activities that a C.N.A. will assist a resident with each day. Performing these tasks safely must be a top priority in every facility. There are countless unnecessary accidents that happen each year in our nursing homes and assisted living facilities simply because of staff taking risky shortcuts.

We have found that many C.N.A's that come from other states or out of the country have some unusual ways of doing things. Many have not been properly trained in infection control. Others do not practice proper body mechanics or understand the concept. Since C.N.A. training is not standardized we see many poorly trained people. We use our video to help in re-training and reviewing all the commonly used skills in resident care.
Our video was put together using the training methods of Registered Nursing Schools. We have found even in some nurse aide textbooks procedures being shown contrary to RN training. Until a national standardized skills training program is adopted there will continue to be these anomalies. This is not to say that there is only one way to do something. But a more consistent skills training program would give residents across the country a consistency from their caregiver regardless of where they were trained.
Since we do not have a national standard for skills training it is up to each facility to adopt, for its own residents, a skills training program that each staff member can use. Performing resident care in a consistent, safe and efficient manor can provide residents with a sense of security and stability.
We hope that you will find our skills video offers your facility the inservice training you are looking for.
